Last week we celebrated the launch of my new cookbook, Japanese Hot Pots, at Matsuri's Sake Room. We had a sake reception featuring Takara Sake and guests were able to sample Chicken, Salmon and Beef Hot Pots. Our friends at NY Mutual brought a Kagami Birake where we celebrated with a breaking of a large sake barrel and passed wooden cups called 'Masu' to all of our guests. A special thank you to AriZona Beverage Company for the wonderful giftbag items and to Altoids for keeping our breaths fresh after the tastings. We thank you for joining us and look forward to everyone trying the Hot Pots on Matsuri's Fall Menu. - Tadashi

Matsuri celebrates Tsukimi (Moon Festival)

Tsukimi, meaning moon-viewing, refers to Japanese festivals honoring the autumn moon. The tradition is so popular in Japan that some people repeat the activities for several evenings following the appearance of the full moon during the eighth lunisolar month. We will be celebrating Tsukimi and have a special lit up paper moon at the restaurant which will change throughout the course of the evening.
Tsukimi traditions include displaying decorations made from Japanese pampas grass (susuki) and eating rice dumplings called Tsukimi dango in order to celebrate the beauty of the moon. Seasonal produce are also displayed as offerings to the moon. The word, tsukimi, is used in Japanese food as well. For example, tsukimi-soba and tsukimi-udon are well-known. They aren't food for moon viewing but Tsukimi indicates a cracked egg in Japanese cooking since the egg yolk resembles the moon.
I am excited to share with you my upcoming cookbook that Harris and I have been been working on for the past year -- "Japanese Hot Pots: Comforting One-Pot Meals." In Japan it has been long believed that sharing a meal from a single pot forges closer relationships. Hot pot cooking is Japan's beloved comfort food, relies on the simple technique of poaching foods in broth inside a single pot while offering a wide variety of ingredients. In Japanese Hot Pots, me and my friend food journalist Harris Salat demystify this tradition for American home cooks with more than 50 hearty hot pots from all corners of Japan.
Illustrated with the best food and location photography, our collection features recipes such as Sumo Wrestler Hot Pot, Beef Sukiyaki, and Sea Bass Shabu-Shabu, including variations for vegetarian recipes, and a primer on Japanese ingredients and hot pot culture.
Our book will be available on September 22 and Matsuri will have special Fall Menu featuring some of our featured Hot Pots for you to try at the restaurant. Stay tuned for our Book Launch Party details or email info@matsurinyc.com to get more information.
